and I guess most importantly for a beer drinker:
Allowed me that first sip of beer (ok admittedly she thought I wouldn't like it because it was bitter)

I can remember the first beer I was allowed to sip as a child in the 1960s; it would have been Tiger Beer, and I wasn't very keen. A decade later ...
